What comes to mind when someone mentions Disney?
We think of whimsical fairytales filled with joy, love, and happiness.
Just overall lighthearted and healing storylines.
But the live-action Snow White seems to have taken a sharp turn from that formula, stirring controversy long before its release and ultimately missing the mark with both critics and audiences.
Instead of enchanting viewers with a modern twist on a beloved classic, it became a flashpoint for debates around “woke” storytelling, studio missteps, and the growing disconnect between Disney and its core fan base.
The original Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs animation, released in 1937, was a groundbreaking cinematic milestone that defined Disney’s legacy.
However, this live-action remake has struggled under the weight of modern expectations, public backlash, and creative overhauls that many feel stripped away the magic.
So what went wrong, and what does this mean for Disney’s future live-action adaptations?
The Drop That Burst The Seams: Controversial Casting And Comments

In an interview with Variety in September 2022 at the Disney Fan Club’s D23 Expo, Rachel Zegler, who plays Snow White in the live-action remake, was scrutinized on her response to being asked about bringing a “modern edge” to the story of “Snow White.”
In the interview, Zegler said, “I just mean that it’s no longer 1937. We absolutely wrote a Snow White that…she’s not going to be saved by the prince, and she’s not going to be dreaming about true love; she’s going to be dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be.”
In another interview at the D23 Expo, Zegler told Extra TV that Snow White’s original story had a big focus on a love story “with a guy who literally stalks her.”
Zegler mentioned how that part of the story was “weird” and that they “didn’t do that this time.”
In a third interview with Entertainment Weekly, Zegler said that she was frightened of the 1937 Snow White and did not watch the movie again until she was cast as Snow White.
She said, “I think I watched it once and never picked it up again. I’m being so serious”.
Overtly Focused On Wokeness
The interview remarks from Zegler received major backlash online and alienated fans of the original story, especially from Disney loyalists and conservatives.
Moreover, casting decisions like a Latina Snow White and the replacement of the seven dwarfs with a diverse group of non-dwarf characters drew more criticism from various audiences.
Many felt that reimagining the princess as a “strong independent woman” was forced and overly didactic, rather than organic or true to the original fairytale.
Misrepresentation Of Little People

Responding to the feedback, Disney deleted the scenes with the non-dwarf characters and replaced them with computer-generated imagery (CGI) dwarfs.
However, this did not sit well with those from the little people community.
Comedian, model, and content creator Fats Timbo said on Sky News that “our representation is already small as it is…to erase that and use GCI, like we’re mythical creatures or people that could be made on computers, it’s disregarding us in general.”
Timbo called this decision upsetting, due to the fact “it reaffirms the negative stereotypes of little people not being actual people.”
Disney Facing Brand Fatigue

Franchise Fatigue is a coined term referring to the audience’s waning interest and enthusiasm for a previously popular franchise.
It’s a phenomenon where audiences feel they have seen enough of a particular franchise and see any reboots as unoriginal or simply just cash grabs.
And Disney is facing this with its recent live-action remakes.
This includes Pinocchio, Peter Pan & Wendy, The Little Mermaid, and of course, Snow white.
With a budget of above US$250 million, Snow White had set out with higher expectations; however, it fell far behind expectations, opening with US$43 million in ticket sales.
Weak Marketing And Delays

Apart from its “woke” storyline, the film faced many other road bumps.
The live-action of Snow White was initially scheduled for March 22, 2024, but was delayed to March 21, 2025.
This was due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, the American actors’ union, which delayed production timelines.
Disney’s marketing has also been inconsistent, with early teasers lacking clarity about the story direction, and behind-the-scenes photos leaked before official visuals were released, generating negative buzz for the movie.
By the time official trailers and posters were released, public perception had already soured.
Disconnect Between Message And Medium
While female empowerment is important and a noble goal, critics argue that Snow White was not the right story to reinvent so radically.
Trying to send modern messages through the lens of a traditional fairy tale created a tonal dissonance.
The story tried to be empowering while still adhering to a dated fairytale structure, resulting in a film that pleases neither traditionalists nor progressives.
Changing Audience Priorities
Today’s moviegoers, especially younger ones, gravitate toward originality, authenticity, and storytelling that resonates with their lived experiences.
Films like Barbie, Everything Everywhere All At Once, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse have succeeded not just for being entertaining, but for offering fresh perspectives.
In contrast, Snow White appeared outdated, despite its attempts to modernize.
It leaned heavily on branding but failed to deliver a compelling reason to revisit the story, especially when streaming options and more dynamic content are just a click away.
A Mirror Reflecting Disney’s Current Struggles
The failure of Snow White isn’t just about one film. It’s a representation of broader issues within Disney, including creative stagnation, misreading audience sentiment, mishandling public relations, and franchise fatigue.
In trying to please everyone, Disney may have pleased no one.
