On May 8th, 2025, the Vatican announced its 267th Pope.

Many around the world found themselves asking, “Who is Pope Leo XIV?”

Also known as Robert Prevost, the 69-year-old pope is the first American pope, marking a truly historical event.

A Deeper Dive Into Pope Leo XIV As A Person

Friends of Pope Leo XIV describe him as “not a showboat” kind of person, but rather someone serious, reliable, and focused.

Not to mention, his good sense of humour.

Born in Chicago in 1955 to parents of Spanish and Franco-Italian descent, he served as an altar boy and was ordained in 1982.

Despite this, he is known as the least American of the American cardinals.

His experiences as a missionary in Peru and a priest in the United States have shaped his views on social justice, immigration, and the environment.

Though born in the US, he was dubbed by the Vatican to be the second pope from the Americas, after Pope Francis, who was from Argentina.

It is also important to note that he was well regarded by the late Pope Francis, who “thought of him highly”, as mentioned by Christopher Lamb, CNN’s Vatican correspondent.

Champion Of Immigrants And The Marginalised

In his first words as Pope Leo XIV, Leo spoke fondly of his predecessor Francis, saying, “We still hear in our ears the weak, but always courageous voice of Pope Francis who blessed us.”

He also emphasised his role in the Augustinian Order and his dedication to building bridges between communities.

As Bishop of Chiclayo in Peru, he worked tirelessly to support marginalised communities and advocate for better housing on the north coast, which is prone to floods.

His views on immigration are shaped by his own experiences growing up in a family of immigrants, which also contributed to his being raised in a very Catholic family.

Pope Leo XIV’s Complex Legacy In Peru

Pope Leo’s time in Peru was marked by both pride and controversy.

He moved to Peru as a missionary in 1985 to work in various rural communities and was known to have an immense burden for the poor and marginalised.

Despite not committing the abuse himself, there have been criticisms of his mishandling of sexual abuse cases during his time as Bishop of Chiclayo.

Three Peruvian women went public with claims that as a bishop, he failed to investigate and punish a priest accused of sexually abusing them.

Committed To Social Justice, Just Like Pope Leo XII

The new Pope’s commitment to social justice is evident in his papal name, Leo XIV.

His papal name is a nod to Pope Leo XII, who wrote an influential treatise on workers’ rights.

Former Archbishop of Boston Seán Patrick O’Malley wrote on his blog that the new pontiff “has chosen a name widely associated with the social justice legacy of Pope Leo XIII.”

Leo XIV has shown support for a declaration from Francis to permit blessings for same-sex couples and others in “irregular situations,” although he has added that bishops must interpret such directives following local contexts and cultures.

Speaking last year about climate change, Cardinal Prevost said that it was time to move “from words to action.”

He called on mankind to build a “relationship of reciprocity” with the environment.

Pope Leo XIV has spoken about concrete measures at the Vatican, including the installation of solar panels and the adoption of electric vehicles.

An Advocate For Women’s Representation

Pope Leo XIV has supported Pope Francis’ decision to allow women, for the very first time, to join the Dicastery for Bishops.

The Dicastery is an administrative body that identifies and recommends future bishops to the Holy See, which is the name for the Pope’s office and the central governing body of the Catholic Church worldwide.

He told the Vatican News in 2023, “On several occasions we have seen that their point of view is an enrichment”.

In 2024, he told the Catholic News Service that women’s presence “contributes significantly to the process of discernment in looking for who we hope are the best candidates to serve the Church in episcopal ministry.”

Does Pope Leo XIV Face A Rocky Road Ahead?

Will Pope Leo XIV be able to overcome his past controversy pertaining to his fallout from his sexual abuse scandals?

This all depends on whether he can navigate the complex web of church politics while staying true to his commitment to social justice and the marginalised communities.

His first days as Pope will be closely watched by many, and his decisions will have far-reaching implications for the Catholic Church.

As the world welcomes the new papacy, one thing is clear. Pope Leo XIV is a complex, multifaceted individual with a deep commitment to his faith and values.

Whether he will be able to bring about meaningful change and carry on the legacy of his predecessor, Pope Francis, remains to be seen.

But one thing is certain.

He will be a Pope like no other.
