Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, the film combines Korean mythology, female empowerment, high-energy animation, and original K‑Pop tunes to spectacular effect
The film quickly became a hit, earning the number one spot on Netflix’s English-language Top 10 list and ranked Top 10 in all countries worldwide, with 24.2 million views in its second week.

Set in a world where supernatural forces threaten humanity, the story centers on three K-pop idols, Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, who use their music and martial prowess to protect fans from demons.
Though they sell out stadiums, their secret duty is to maintain the Honmoon, a mystical seal against evil souls.
Conceived during the pandemic, Huntrix sprang from Kang’s desire to highlight Korean culture in animation and explore demon-hunting through the lens of music and identity.
Kang was inspired by K-pop group BTS’s virtual concerts as a way to bring people together, and animate female heroes with humor, heart, and complexity.

Rumi, the leader of Huntrix
Leader and lead vocalist, Rumi is strong-willed and protective.
She is voiced by Arden Cho and sung by EJAE, a top Korean-American singer-songwriter famous for writing songs for K-Pop groups like Red Velvet, LE SSERAFIM and Aespa.
In the movie, Rumi secretly grapples with her half-demon heritage, a truth that threatens her voice just when the stakes are highest.
Mira, the main dancer
As the main dancer and visual, Mira embodies style and energy.
She’s voiced by May Hong and sung by Audrey Nuna, a American R&B singer and rapper famous for her singles “Damn Right” and “Comic Sans”.
Though bright and energetic, Mira battles deep feelings of unworthiness given her tough upbringing.
Zoey, the ‘maknae’
The youngest and the rapper of the group, Zoey, is a Korean‑American who battles quiet insecurity and struggles to trust her role in the trio’s tight bond.
Zoey is voiced by Yoo Ji-Young and sung by Rei Ami, a Korean-American singer-songwriter.
Together, they blend everyday teenage humor and attitude with formidable combat skills, firing up both the stage and the battlefield.
What Inspired Huntrix?
Maggie Kang wanted to pay homage to Korean mythos, inspired by shamanic traditions where music and dance protect communities.
K-pop culture is an undeniably distinct part of Korean culture. The aesthetics for the movie were drawn from real idol groups like Itzy, Blackpink, and Twice, as well as boy groups BTS, TXT, and ATEEZ.
In the movie, Huntrix rivals the Saja Boys, a group of four demon-boy idols who mirror a darker, reaper-inspired style.
Virtual concerts by BTS during the pandemic era were a big inspiration for the project, as music was a bridge between communities in isolation and a way to uplift and unify others.
Rival Saja Boys

Every great heroine needs an equally compelling antagonist, and that’s exactly what the Saja Boys bring to the table.
“Saja” means lion in Korean, but also references messengers of death, or reapers from Korean folklore.
The dual meaning was intentional as the Saja Boys are avatars of a darker force, harnessing the same blend of performance and spiritual power as Huntric, but channeling it in more ominous ways.
While Huntric performs to uplift, heal, and protect, the Saja Boys present the opposite: their music is seductive, aggressive, and emotionally charged, reflecting a worldview born from pain, ambition, and a willingness to blur moral lines.
The Saja Boys represent the temptation to abandon duty for fame, to let the spotlight become a weapon.
Yet, they aren’t outright villains.
The film crafts them as nuanced characters with layered motivation, and some fans have begun rooting for their redemption arcs.
The Power of the Soundtrack
No K‑pop film would be complete without a hit soundtrack, and K-pop Demon Hunters delivers one that’s stacked with the best vocalists the K-pop industry can offer.
Featuring original songs composed by hitmakers like Teddy Park, THEBLACKLABEL, Jenna Andrews, Lindgren, and more, the film’s music plays an integral role in both its storytelling and character development.
Notably, the title track TAKEDOWN was sung by Twice members Jeongyeon, Jihyo, and Chaeyoung.
Songs like “How It’s Done”, “Soda Pop”, “Golden”, “Takedown” (the big climactic anthem), and rival boy bands’ “Saja Pop” aren’t just catchy, they’re plot machines, powering emotional arcs and battles.
Hot upon release, the soundtrack shot up Spotify global charts, even rivalling BTS and Ariana Grande, with millions streaming and viral fan art performances.
Why It Matters
K-pop Demon Hunters stands out by showcasing authentic Korean representation in animation and merges the genre lines of K-pop music, fantasy action, and supernatural thrills.
The movie focuses on giving audience members memorable characters with real flaws, humour, and character growth arcs.
Of course, the movie soundtrack was intended as an integral part of the narrative and the primary force for driving emotion.
Whether you’re a longtime K‑pop fan, a lover of supernatural stories, or someone looking for a fresh take on animated heroes, K-pop Demon Hunters is a bold, heartfelt, and electrifying journey that will leave you cheering for Huntrix on stage and in battle.
